[The following article is taken from the CSICA Insulator February 2000 Issue] The widely supported construction industry objective of a single set of comprehensive, coordinated national model construction codes becomes reality in 2000 with the publication of three new international codes and updated editions of existing International Codes "The construction industry government, code enforcement officials, architects, engineers, builders and industry-related-associations - strongly supports a single family of compatible model codes versus the regional codes that have been used for decades," said BOCA Chief Executive Officer Paul Heilstedt. The three model code organizations responded to the challenge of one set of codes by creating the International Code Council. Since its creation in 1994, the International Code Council has used an open code development process to create a series of international codes that allows and encourages participation by all segments of the construction industry, Heilstedt explained. "All levels of government and the entire construction industry will realize a significant increase in efficiency by utilizing a singular, coordinated set of model codes. BOCA is assisting all levels of government in adopting international codes to reach the goal of compatible codes and to better public safety," Heilstedt said. The three newest International Codes the International Building Code, the International Fire Code, and the International Residential Code complete the family of international codes, which now includes 11 compatible codes that complement each other. The 2000 International Building Code (BOCA Member price $58 soft cover, $66 loose leaf; $73 and $83 list) addresses design and installation of building systems with requirements that emphasize performance. The 2000 International Fire Code (BOCA Member price $48 soft cover, $55 loose leaf; $60 and $69 list), coordinated with the International Building Code, references national standards to comprehensively address fire safety in new and existing buildings. Existing International Codes have been updated for 2000 editions. The 2000 International Plumbing Code (BOCA Member price $38 soft cover, $44 loose leaf; $48 and $55 list) addresses minimum provisions for fixtures, piping, fittings and devices as well as design and installation methods for water supply, sanitary drainage and storm drainage. The 2000 International Private Sewage Disposal Code (BOCA Member price $15, $19 list) details septic tank and effluent absorption, and other disposal systems. It contains provisions for evaluating site and soil conditions, outlines use of methods and materials, and includes tables for pressure distribution systems. The 2000 International Mechanical Code (BOCA Member price $38 soft cover, $44 loose leaf; $48 and $55 list) comprehensively regulates mechanical systems and equipment including HVAC, exhaust systems, chimneys and vents, ducts, appliances, boilers, water heaters, refrigeration, hydronic piping and solar systems. The 2000 International Fuel Gas Code (BOCA Member price $38, $48 list) contains complete requirements for fuel gas piping systems, equipment and accessories. It includes combustion air requirements, sizing tables for venting Category 1 appliances and provisions that are coordinated with the National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z223.1). The 2000 International Property Maintenance Code (BOCA Member price $21, $26 list) contains requirements for heating and plumbing in existing workplaces, hotels and residential occupancies, minimum light and ventilation criteria. The 2000 International Energy Conservation Code (BOCA Member price $22, $28 list) covers energy efficiency provisions for residential and commercial building, prescriptive and performance-based approaches to energy-efficient design, and building envelope requirements for thermal performance and air leakage. The 2000 ICC Electrical Code (BOCA Member price $5, $6 list) contains administrative text necessary to administer and enforce the National Electrical Code and complies with electrical provisions contained in the other international codes. The 2000 editions on the international codes will be available February 1 from BOCA International, 1-800-214-4321 ext. 710 Web link to BOCA: www.bocai.org |
