Exterior Coatings Estimating

All coverages given in data sheets are without losses and represent material actually on the surface. Additions must be made by the estimator for application conditions and the applicator.

For estimating purposes, 20% excess will generally cover normal losses for heavy mastic coatings. Lighter coatings, when applied by air spray, can require 30% excess.

NOTE: Trowel applications are subject to operator technique but are not significantly changed by wind. Airless spray applications are subject to applicator technique, scaffolding arrangement and, somewhat, by wind.

COVERAGE CAN BE EXTREMELY VARIABLE AND THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE. CONTRACTOR'S EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR PERSONNEL SHOULD BE USED WHENEVER AVAILABLE.

The following Tables are available for your convenience:
  • Table C1 - Surface Area Formulae for Various Shapes
  • Table C2 - Coatings Coverage Chart
  • Table C3 - Standard Sphere Dimensions

Calculations:
Break units to be coated into its elements: sidewalls, roof, heads, and or bottom, etc., spherical area, and legs. Piping can be treated as a cylinder or area/lineal foot taken from various charts.

Formulae for area of various shapes are given in Table C1. Be sure to include insulation thickness in square footage calculations. For tank sidewalls, spheres and piping; the diameter will be the vessel diameter plus twice the insulation thickness.

Once the total area is calculated, divide by 100 and multiply by the coverage rate/100 sq. ft. (normally 6 U.S. gallons; check Manufacturers Data Sheet) to get gallons without losses. Add to this loss allowance from experience or by 1.2 for a 20% loss.

Gallons = A x C x F
100

Where: A = Area to be coated
C = Coverage rate in gallons/100 sq. ft.
F = Correction for losses 1.2 for 20%, 1.1 for 10%, 1.25 for 25%, etc.
