EXAMPLE 1-Sealant required for 1,000 ft. of 4" pipe with 3" of insulation.

Where: D = 10.75
d = 4.5"
t = 3.11"
N = 2
B = 2 (24" length)
Longitudinal Area = N x t x l = 2 x 3.11 x 1000 = 518 sq. ft.

Butt Area = .7854 (D²-d²) x length + l

        = .7854 [(10.75)² - (4.5)²] x 100l = 260 sq. ft.

Example 1 - Total Area = 518 + 260 = 778 sq. ft.

Gallons at 1/8" = 778 = 59.8

Allowance for losses, etc. = 59.8 x 1.25 = 75 gallons


EXAMPLE 2- Sealant required for 1,000 ft. of 24" pipe with 3" of insulation.

Where: D = 30"
d = 24"
t = 3.0"
N = 8
B = 1.5 (18" length)
Longitudinal Area = N x t x l = 8 x 3 x 1000 = 2,000 sq. ft.

Butt Area = .7854 (D²-d²) x length + l

               = .7854 (30² - 24²) x 100l = 1179 sq. ft.

Example 2 - Total Area = 2,000 + 1,179 = 3,179 sq. ft.

Gallons at 1/8" = 3179 = 245

Allowance for losses, etc. = 1.25 x 245 = 306 gallons


EXAMPLE 3
Double layer with sealant between layers, inner layer dry joints - 6" pipe, 2" inner layer, 3" outer layer, 1000 ft. of pipe. The first step is to get the diameters, thicknesses and number of sections from the insulation tables.

Inner Layer D1 = 10.75" outside diameter
d1 = 6.625" inside diameter
t1 = 2.03" thickness
Outer Layer D2 = 17.00" outside diameter
d2 = 10.75" inside diameter
t2 = 3.08" thickness

Sealant areas to be coated are the inside, longitudinal and butt joint areas of the outer layer.

Inside of Outer Layer A = ñ d2 l = 3.14 x 10.75 x 1000 = 2,813 sq. ft.

Longitudinal Area = N x t x l = 2 x 3.08 x 1000 = 513 sq. ft.

Butt Area = .7854 (D2)²-(d2)² x length + l

               = .7854 [(17)² - 10.75)²] x 100l = 472 sq. ft.

Example 3 - Total Area = 2,813 + 513 + 472 = 3,798 sq. ft.

Gallons at 1/8" = 3798 = 292

Allowance for losses, etc. = 1.25 x 292 = 365 gallons
