"Did You Ever Wonder How Much Energy Pipe Insulation Really Saves?"

The North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) recently conducted an insulation energy audit at Bethlehem's Steel's Burns Harbor Steel Plant in Burns Harbor, Indiana. The insulation energy audit compared Bethelem's insulation package to that of bare piping and equipment to get an assessment of the 'energy' value of the insulation. The audit was performed on steam distribution piping only (from the boiler and turbines to the outside building - it did not include internal piping within the out buildings). The results demonstrate the contribution industrial insulation makes to Bethelhem Steel's steam distribution system - 2,663,564,000,000 Btus saved annually by the insulation alone.

The audit was conducted during the unveiling of the Steam Challenge program which was held at Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor Steel Plant, Steam Challenge is a co-managed program with the Department of Energy and the Alliance to Save Energy. The program goal is to slash industrial energy consumption by helping industry make educated decisions about their energy use, decisions that can dramatically affect a manufacturers finances in terms of energy costs and the global environment.

Calculation for the energy audit were preformed by the NAIMA 3E Plus Insulation Thickness Computer Program. The program can be downloaded from the Department of Energy's web page - free of charge. http://www.doe.gov/steam/files/software.html

"Well? What About the Environment?"

Subject: Effect of Insulation on Our Environment

If U.S. industry were to insulate steam processing lines, boilers, tanks, process equipment and ducting to economic thicknesses, an additional 51.3 trillion BTUs could be saved annually. This is equivalent to driving the average American car 8.6 billion miles or 3 million trips across the U.S. from coast to coast.

In addition, another 8.18 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions could be avoided each year if all industrial facilities were insulated to a cost- effective level.
